For seaside lovers - What's better than seaside fun? Have a coffee, an icecream or try the famous Morecambe Bay shrimps in one of the cafés lining the seafront and admire the grand views across the estuary to the Lake District mountains. Or visit the Eric Morecambe statue which looks out across the Promenade. See the art influences of the Tern project – a series of installations on the Prom, and the art deco façade of the lovingly restored Midland Hotel.
Yes, I like Morecambe - one of its nicknames was Bradford by the Sea, because it was such a popular destination. I have been on the MetroCard trip for some years now. I usually go and see if there are any bargains at the big shoe shop on the front, walk out along the Stone Jetty and look at the view and the birds (real and sculptures), go and smile with Eric Morecambe and go to the secondhand bookshop on the front. And although the Settle-Carlisle is better known for its scenery, it is a very pleasant trip by train with some superb views.
ReplyDeleteWent to Morecambe today with the special ticket. As it was a Saturday and I have grey hair the ticket clerk double-checked it was a MetroCard I was showing, not a senior pass! Train windows could have been cleaner, but still excellent views and we soon left behind the North Sea fret invading West Yorkshire. Blue, sunny, loads of people promenading on foot and bike at Morecambe. And, the tide was in as we arrived so the bay looked great and there were lots of birds on the high water mark - oystercatchers, lapwing, shelduck, curlew, and little ones with orange beaks and bills. Walked to Hest Bank then got no 5 bus to Carnforth and then the train back.
ReplyDeleteBe aware that you might have to stand all the way there (and back)
ReplyDeleteThe last fortnight of this offer is often very busy. Northern Rail are very concerned that overcrowding does not happen and that is one of the reasons for the period of the offer changing for 2011/2012.
